Can anyone describe the difference between the AD groups admin and domain admin?  Can the AD admin group do just as much, security wise, as the domain admin group?

Sorry for the delay - are you talking about the "Domain Admins" and "Administrators" groups found in each AD domain?  If so the difference is basically none.  Both have Full Control to all AD objects in the domain.  Technically the Administrators group does not have local admin authority on member servers and workstations while Domain Admins does.  However a member of Administrators can always had himself to the Domain Admins groups.  Therefore, ultimately no difference.
